Welcome to Coláiste Lorcáin

Colåiste Lorcåin aims to develop all aspects of the individual student and to provide an education that is relevant to his/her needs and which will prepare him/her for life and living in the modern world. As part of this, we help our students to attain the highest academic standards, each to the level of their ability.

Our students are encouraged to participate to the fullest possible extent in the social, physical and cultural activities of the school so that on completion of their formal second level education, they may emerge as self disciplined, responsible and well adjusted citizens, capable of playing an active and positive role in modern society.

Parents are encouraged to maintain close contact with the school. There is a need to work closely so that home/school can have a shared sense of purpose and mutual respect with the sharing of information, responsibility and skills.

TYO students and his graffiti - 22 February 2012
Art student chooses Graffiti as an expression of his individuality.
Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst officials and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing art form whose value is highly contested, reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.
The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human, societal living. Graffiti has been found on uncovered, ancient, Egyptian monuments, and graffiti even was preserved on walls in Pompeii.
Amongst the students in Coláiste Lorcáin is an art student who has developed a talent for graffiti art. Ryan Donoghue was inspired at a young age by the art seen in Dublin city. Ryan has developed his art form and sees it not merely as an illicit intrusion on private/public property, but as a personal expression in art form. Ryan has submitted his work to the Éigse committee in Carlow with the hope of having it considered for public display in the coming Éigse Festival.

CivicLink - Trip to Belfast 25/11/11 - 12 December 2011

On November 24th and 25th 16 students from Colaiste Lorcain took part in an exchange with Ashfield School for Girls in Belfast. This exchange was organized by Cooperation Ireland as part of their Civiclink programme. This programme was started to foster positive links between schools, north and south of the border, as part of the ongoing Peace Process.

The sixteen students from Transition Year, travelled up early on the Thursday morning accompanied by Mr. Cawley and Miss McFarland. They met their counterparts in Belfast and had a tour of the school before a series of workshops and activities. Over the course of the two days of the exchange, students from both schools did a number of activities together, including a bus trip around Belfast and a trip to the Peace Wall.

The students from Colaiste Lorcain were splendid ambassadors for the school, and they contributed positively to a very worthwhile programme. Thank you to all concerned, especially Miss McFarland for organizing the trip. There will be a return visit from Ashfield School in the New Year.

Spanish Visitors - 12 October 2011

Spanish visitors:  Coláiste Lorcáin extended a warm welcome to our Spanish students and teachers who visited recently.    Colaiste Lorcáin extiende una cálida bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes de español y profesores que están de visita para el próximo par de semanas.   On the 20th of September a group of 25 Spanish students, plus two leaders, arrived in Castledermot in order to be part of a three-week High School integration programme.   The initiative was started some years ago by the Department of Education of Vigo's City Council -Vigo being the hometown of all the students in the programme. The aim is to make the most of English Language learning as well as getting involved in everyday Irish school life and Irish culture. All the students have been carefully selected taking into account their level of English but also their overall marks. The group in Castledermot comes from two different high schools in Vigo: Colegio María Inmaculada and Colegio Apóstol Santiago. The outcome were a well integrated group of students that enjoyed Ireland very much!
